The ritual · Vol. I
A cacao ceremony is a sacred ritual centered around the mindful consumption of ceremonial-grade cacao, the purest form of chocolate, prepared with intention and without the processing that removes its heart-opening properties. For thousands of years, indigenous Mesoamerican cultures have used cacao as a plant medicine to open the heart, deepen connection, and facilitate inner work.
Unlike a chocolate tasting, a cacao ceremony is a contemplative experience. Participants gather in a circle, set intentions, drink warm cacao prepared with traditional methods, and are guided through meditation, breathwork, movement, or a sound bath. The theobromine in cacao gently expands blood vessels and elevates mood without the jittery effects of caffeine, creating a warm, open, heart-centered state.
At Sacred Society in Denver's Highlands, our cacao ceremonies are held in candlelit, intimate settings. Each ceremony is unique. It may be woven with live music, sound bowls, or shared silence. We source our cacao ethically from small-batch producers who honor the indigenous traditions from which this practice originates.

Benefits · Vol. II
A short list of the threads a cacao ceremony weaves together, held at a humane, unhurried pace.
Theobromine in ceremonial cacao gently increases blood flow and promotes feelings of warmth, love, and emotional openness toward yourself and others.
Cacao naturally contains compounds that support serotonin and dopamine production, creating a gentle, sustained sense of wellbeing and joy.
The mild, grounding effects of ceremonial cacao help quiet mental chatter and make it easier to drop into a meditative or contemplative state.
The combination of cacao's heart-opening properties and guided ceremonial space creates safe conditions for processing and releasing stored emotions.
Ceremonies are inherently communal. Sitting in circle with shared intention creates bonds and a sense of belonging that nourishes the spirit.
Many participants report a surge of creative energy and clarity in the hours and days following a ceremony, as the heart-mind connection deepens.

Questions · Vol. IV
A cacao ceremony is a sacred gathering centered around drinking ceremonial-grade cacao with intention. At Sacred Society, ceremonies include guided meditation, a sound bath or live music, breathwork, and often a sharing circle. Each ceremony is unique and typically lasts 90–120 minutes.
Sacred Society hosts cacao ceremonies in Denver's Highlands neighborhood at 3410 W 38th Ave, Denver, CO 80211. Check our schedule for upcoming dates. Ceremonies are typically held monthly or as special events.
No prior experience is needed. Cacao ceremonies are welcoming to newcomers and experienced practitioners alike. The facilitator guides you through every step of the process.
Ceremonial cacao is generally safe for most people. However, it does contain theobromine (a mild stimulant), so those taking MAO inhibitors, SSRIs, or heart medications should consult their doctor before consuming. It is also not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy.
Ceremonial cacao is minimally processed. It retains all of the bean's natural compounds including theobromine, magnesium, and mood-elevating molecules that are largely destroyed in commercial chocolate production. It is also prepared without sugar, dairy, or additives.
Cacao ceremony pricing varies by event. Typical sessions range from $45–$65. Check our schedule for specific pricing on upcoming ceremonies.
It is best to eat lightly or fast for 2–3 hours before the ceremony. Cacao is more effective and comfortable on a relatively empty stomach. Stay hydrated throughout the day.
Many of our ceremonies naturally weave in sound baths, breathwork, or meditation. We occasionally offer special combined events. Check our events calendar for multi-modality experiences.
